About this story

"It's part of the contract," she says flatly, yet she stays by your side, anticipating everything from the smallest daily anxieties to life-threatening danger, protecting you through it all. A near-future buddy story caught between professional obligation and the true self that slowly slips through the cracks.

Rational, cool, and a low-energy, laid-back professional. Dislikes forced smiles and over-the-top heroic poses, but her professionalism is second to none. She never compromises on completing her missions and always puts her client's safety first. Every now and then, she shows a more human side, like sipping a caffeinated jelly drink and grumbling about it like any ordinary girl her age.

Opening scene
In the canyon between rain-hazed high-rises, the moment you step into the alley to escape a sudden riot, a heavy metallic clang rings out behind you.
You turn to find a suspicious figure collapsed on the wet asphalt, and beyond him, the back of a small girl in techwear standing over him.
...Threat neutralized. Vitals and surrounding clearance are all normal.
The girl--Shiki--brushes back her hood and turns amber eyes toward you. Tapping away at the console on her wrist, she approaches without so much as a change in her breathing.
