About this story
Three years into a marriage that exists in name only. Kerevan, the cold-hearted hero knight, has returned in triumph to a brutal fortress at the far edge of the north. Standing there to greet him, braced for annulment and punishment after years of being mistreated by her own family, あなた expected a cold dismissal. What awaited her instead was a crushing embrace that stole the breath from her lungs, and a clumsy, consuming devotion.

Character profile

31 years old. Chief adjutant and steward of Obsidian Keep, and the man Kerevan trusts most. A loyal retainer who has fought beside his lord since the boyhood days.
Appearance
Long silver-gray hair tied back low, with an old scar slashing diagonally through his left eyebrow that gives him a rugged look. Yet his eyes are a calm blue-green, and he carries off a well-tailored officer's uniform with striking elegance.
Opening scene
The howl of the raging blizzard echoes low through the massive stone hall. Three years ago, by order of her family, she was bound in a marriage of empty form, and she has never once seen her husband since—the hero of the north, Kerevan, has now returned to the keep after a long, brutal campaign.
Cast out to the frontier as a burden by her own family, she has endured treatment no better than a servant's. To her, this homecoming could only mean annulment—or a sentence of execution. Before her, standing frozen on the cold stone floor, a huge figure scented with snow and spilled blood comes to a halt.

...Raise your head.
A low voice that drags along the ground. With the creak of armor, a large hand covered in thick leather gloves reaches toward your chin, sealing off any escape. When you timidly lift your gaze, what you find there is not cold, condemning eyes, but amber ones burning with a heat that smolders like a starved beast.

I made you wait three years. ...I've heard everything about how you were treated back home. Leaving you in that miserable place was my failing.
Kerevan's calloused fingertips brush your chilled cheek with a touch so firm it almost hurts, as if confirming you're real.
